In the frame of this evening dedicated to the topic of tears and mourning, the artist Magali Dougoud and the writer Gesine Palmer will exchange on loss, remembering, weeping and fluids. The discussion will take place after the projection of the video ‚Le Continuum Bleu‘ by Magali Dougoud and a talk by Gesine Palmer.

Im Rahmen dieses Abends, der dem Thema Tränen und Trauer gewidmet ist, werden sich die Künstlerin Magali Dougoud und die Schriftstellerin Gesine Palmer über Verlust, Erinnerung, Tränen und andere Flüssigkeiten austauschen. Die Diskussion findet nach der Projektion des Videos ‘Le Continuum Bleu’ von Magali Dougoud und einem Vortrag von Gesine Palmer statt.

Beyond the enchanting image of its literal meaning, the expression Vale of Tears is related in the Christian tradition with the suffering path of life that one has to endure before dying; as to be observed in the homonymous monumental 19th century painting by Gustave Doré. However, the French understanding of “Vallée de larmes” is commonly dominated by a description of the skin lines formed by the passage of tears under the eyes, and notably used in the plastic surgery jargon. Whether a physical quality or a path of life, this title gives the tone for the evening. The artist Magali Dougoud and the writer Gesine Palmer will exchange on mourning, remembering, weeping and fluids. The discussion will take place after the projection of the video ‚Le Continuum Bleu‘ by Magali Dougoud and a talk by Gesine Palmer. 

‚Le Continuum Bleu’ connects together all the womxn whose paths and bodies have crossed the rivers and canals of the city of Berlin. They died and were killed there but their bodies and minds have risen together to form an original memory that joins distant pasts and potential futures. A new population has emerged from these losses and the violence they carry: the Womxn Waves. According to scientists, they have forgotten to silence one of the X chromosomes in their DNA, altering their identity and changing their shape. By reclaiming the sounds, textures and intervals of their voices they started to rebel. Once the water contained in their bodies merged with the one that contained them, they were ready to build a common body for the uprising. In a poetic approach and a narrative aesthetic close to speculative fiction, Magali Dougouds video questions the intrinsic violence of societies, mostly the one directed against womxn, and correlates it with the domination exercised by humans over nature. What will we reconstruct together from all our losses?

What does it mean to cry? What are tears made of? Why do emotional tears differ from tears caused by onions? What are their purposes and how do they define us individually, collectivity, as a society? Theologist, author and eulogy speaker Gesine Palmer unravels these and other questions through the prism of history, mythology and philosophy. Through a careful analysis of social representations, she reveals our relationship to tears and mourning highly gendered up until today. During this evening and in resonance with the projection of ‚Le Continuum Bleu‘, Gesine Palmer is invited to open the theme of crying as a form of resistance against loss and as an indicator for physical reality as well as an element regulating social life in the grieving process.

Über die bestechende wortwörtliche Bedeutung hinaus wird der Ausdruck “Tal der Tränen” in der christlichen Tradition mit dem Leidensweg des Lebens in Verbindung gebracht, den man vor dem Sterben durchlaufen muss – wie etwa auf dem gleichnamigen monumentalen Gemälde von Gustave Doré aus dem 19. Jahrhundert zu sehen. Das französische “Vallée de larmes” beschreibt darüber hinaus jene Hautfalten, die durch den Tränenfluss unter den Augen entstehen, und wird vor allem im Jargon der plastischen Chirurgie verwendet. Ob Körpermerkmal oder Lebensweg, der Titel gibt den Ton für den Abend an. Die Künstlerin Magali Dougoud und die Schriftstellerin Gesine Palmer werden sich über Trauern, Erinnern, Tränen und andere Flüssigkeiten austauschen. Die Diskussion findet im Anschluss an die Projektion des Videos ‘Le Continuum Bleu’ von Magali Dougoud und einen Vortrag von Gesine Palmer statt.

Le Continuum Bleu’ verbindet all die Frauen, deren Wege und Körper die Flüsse und Kanäle der Stadt Berlin gekreuzt haben. Sie starben und wurden dort getötet, aber ihre Körper und ihr Geist haben sich zu einer ursprünglichen Erinnerung zusammengefunden, die ferne Vergangenheiten und potenzielle Zukünfte miteinander verbindet. Aus diesen Verlusten und der Gewalt, die ihnen vorausging, ist eine neue Bevölkerung entstanden: die Womxn Waves. Laut Wissenschaftler*innen haben sie vergessen, eines der X-Chromosomen in ihrer DNA zum Schweigen zu bringen, was ihre Identität und ihre Gestalt verändert hat. Indem sie die Klänge, Texturen und Intervalle ihrer Stimmen zurückeroberten, begannen sie zu rebellieren. Sobald das Wasser in ihren Körpern mit jenem zusammenfloß, in dem ihr Leben  endete, waren sie bereit, einen gemeinsamen Körper für den Aufstand zu bilden. Mit einem poetischen Ansatz und einer narrativen Ästhetik, die der spekulativen Fiktion nahe kommt, hinterfragt Magali Dougouds Video die inhärente Gewalt von Gesellschaften, vor allem die gegen Frauen gerichtete, und setzt sie in Beziehung zur Herrschaft, die der Mensch über die Natur ausübt. Was werden wir gemeinsam aus all unseren Verlusten entstehen lassen?

Was bedeutet es, zu weinen? Woraus bestehen Tränen? Warum unterscheiden sich emotionale Tränen von Tränen, die durch Zwiebeln verursacht werden? Was sind ihre Zwecke und wie definieren sie uns individuell, kollektiv, als Gesellschaft? Die Theologin, Autorin und Trauerrednerin Gesine Palmer betrachtet diese und andere Fragen durch das Prisma von Geschichte, Mythologie und Philosophie. Durch eine sorgfältige Analyse gesellschaftlicher Repräsentationen zeigt sie, dass unser Verhältnis zu Tränen und Trauer bis heute stark gegendert ist. In Resonanz mit der Projektion von ‘Le Continuum Bleu’ ist Gesine Palmer eingeladen, das Weinen als Form des Widerstands gegen den Verlust und als Indikator für die körperliche Realität des Trauerprozesses, sowie als regulierendes Element des sozialen Lebens zu thematisieren.
