What drives political action? Where does the desire for change, for community, for anything come from? Is desire always already political? Jules Gleeson, Luce deLire and Oliver Toth invite some special guests, including YOU to a conversation about transformations, transitions, upheavals and the forces that drive them. Right there in the mix are Spinoza, Schopenhauer, decolonization, transsexuality and the ever looming question: Is there life on Marx?

More concretely, the confused feeling that something is really wrong in the world is currently articulated most strongly in a neo fascist aggression against “the system”. Where does the desire for change come from? Why is it often turned into neo-colonial phantasies or leftist self-hatred? How come ghost stories of mass expropriation and left-wing extremism seem to be popular in media coverage of left politics? Are mutual aggression and exploitation all there is? Can desire be attentive rather than appropriative? In an informal setting, we want to shed some light on that desire. And maybe, if we’re lucky, ‘communism’ will turn out not so much to be a ghost as it is veritably undead.
Was treibt den Willen zur Veränderung, zum Wunsch nach Gemeinschaft, nach irgendetwas? Wie wird dieser Wunsch politisch? Oder ist er das immer schon? Jules Gleeson, Luce deLire und Oliver Toth laden ein – DICH und ein paar special guests – zu einem Gespräch über Transformationen, Transitionen, Übergänge, Umwälzungen und die Kräfte, die sie antreiben. Mit dabei sind Spinoza, Schopenhauer, Entkolonialisierung, Transsexualität und die unausweichliche Frage: Gibt es Leben auf dem Marx?
Konkreter: Ein wirres Gefühl hat die Politik ergriffen: etwas stimmt nicht in der Welt. Derzeit artikuliert sich das Gefühl am stärksten in einer neofaschistischen Aggression gegen “das System”. Woher kommt der Trieb zur Veränderung? Warum verwandelt er sich oft in neokoloniale Phantasien oder linken Selbsthass? Sind Aggression und Ausbeutung alles, was als politische Option bleibt? Kann Begehren achtsam sein statt anzueignen? Wie kommt es, dass Gespenstergeschichten von Massenenteignung und Linksextremismus Medienberichterstattung über linke Politik zu dominieren scheinen? In einem informellen Rahmen wollen wir ein wenig Licht auf dieses Begehren werfen. Und wenn wir Glück haben, entpuppt sich der “Kommunismus” weniger als Gespenst, denn als wahrhaft untot.

Jules Joanne Gleeson is a queer historian and Londoner, based in Vienna. Her current research is focused on the exclusion of eunuchs from the Byzantine-era monasteries of Mount Athos. She’s written for publications including VICE, the Verso Books Blog, Pluto Press, Identities Journal, and Viewpoint Magazine.
