Wo Pferd war soll KI werden

Pferde und Künstliche Intelligenz (KI) stehen an unterschiedlichen Enden des Spektrums technologischen Fortschritts – in dieser Ausstellung führen wir sie zusammen, um KI nach ihren Grenzen und Potentialen zu befragen.

Was haben Pferde und künstliche Intelligenz gemeinsam? Sie sind die Horizonte der technologischen Gegenwart. Für Jahrtausende haben Pferde das menschliche Leben dominiert – als Waffen, als Transportmittel, als Kommunikationsmedium, als Investitionsobjekt und als emotionaler Bezugspunkt. Mit der Industrialisierung löst die Dampfmaschine das Pferd als dominante Technologie ab. Heute scheint es, als wäre die künstliche Intelligenz die dominante Technologie der Zukunft. Schon bald werden Kommunikation, Transport und Waffensysteme von künstlicher Intelligenz dominiert werden. Wie können wir diesen Paradgimenwechsel begreifen?

Wir müssen uns eines Tricks bedienen. Denn oft verstellt uns die Nähe zum Objekt den Blick. WIr sind einfach zu nah dran um zu begreifen was passiert. Deshalb schauen wir auf die Künstliche Intelligenz aus der Perspektive des Pferdes. Mithilfe dieser Distanz und der dadurch erzeugten Entfremdung hoffen wir, einen klareren Blick auf die Gegenwart zu bekommen – und auf die Zukunft …

Horses and artificial intelligence (AI) are at opposite ends of the spectrum of technological progress—in this exhibition, we bring them together to explore the limits and potential of AI.

Why horses? A paradigm is an unavoidable point of reference. It is the way in which we give reality a (coherent) meaning. A paradigm is a way of accessing the world – and without contrast, the paradigm is the world. Paradigms are therefore characterized by their immersion. The paradigm always seems inevitable, unavoidable, and necessary. This means that the paradigm can only be explored from its edges. It therefore requires contrast with other paradigms. That is why we are examining artificial intelligence through the horse in this exhibition.

As historical companions of humankind – once irreplaceable, now marginalized – they are suitable as metaphorical observers of technological change. Horses have shaped human life for thousands of years – as working animals, military equipment, and luxury goods. By the end of World War II, however, the era of horses had come to an end: motorized vehicles had long surpassed them. Today, sport horses are the remnants of a completely different world. They are therefore particularly suited as marginalized observers of the new paradigm shift from digital media to artificial intelligence.
