Prepping for the Unexpected – Kunst, Theorie und Sauerkraut

So. 08.11.26  |  11:00  Uhr  | Open doors

Prepping for the Unexpected brings together artistic, theoretical and practical approaches to build a collective repertoire for the unforeseen – by sharing knowledge and resources and experimenting with improvisation as a resistant practice.

In a world of multiple crises, ecological threats, geopolitical conflicts, and social upheavals unsettle what once seemed certain. This much seems sure, though: things will turn out differently than expected. Is it possible to prepare for a future, whose outcome remains unknown? What does it take?

Preppers stockpile supplies, gather equipment, learn survival skills, and run through possible crisis scenarios in order to protect themselves and those close to them. The familiar imagery is one of hoarded tins of  food, toilet paper, and isolated masculinity. But genuine agency looks different.

Prepping for the Unexpected proposes an alternative to this logic of individual self-protection: an approach to preparation rooted in shared knowledge, accessible resources, and capacity to act collectively. To explore this, the event brings prepping into tension with improvisation. Whether in theatre, music, or disaster management, improvisation draws on knowledge, experience, and

practiced skills — as well as the willingness to let go of what has been tried and tested. Preparation does not provide a ready-made plan. Instead, it builds a repertoire for situations that cannot be planned for.

Prepping for the Unexpected brings together artistic, theoretical, and practical contributions from Dr.-Ing. Margit Schild, Nolundi Tschudi, Dr. Eva Backhaus, PARTICLE TRIALITY, and Luiza Prado to explore and experiment with this alternative approach to preparedness.
