Chapter 3: The Marriage of Dept and Profit. Led by Dominique Tegho
In his bestseller “Talking to My Daughter About the Economy: A Brief History of Capitalism” Yanis Varoufakis (former Greek Minister of Finance) explains to his daughter, and to the readers, everything one needs to know about the global economy – what it is, how it came to be, and why it can never be apolitical. While reading the book I was struck by the following: on the one hand, it is definitely a successful attempt in provoking critical thinking and explaining complex concepts in simple terms e.g. debt economy, the banking system, and histories of inequality. On the other hand, I could not avoid reading it as a masterpiece of Mansplanation calling for a response.
“Talking to My Girlfriends About the Economy” is a performative-feminist reading group led by four female practitioners from the Berliner free performing arts scene, coming from different backgrounds and phases in their career. These sessions take Varoufakis’s book as a starting point, and appropriate the text as a means to talk about our own economies and the market societies we are involved in.
It is an intimate studygroup in economics and a very serious girl-talk.
