Denazify yourselves! An AI performance

The denazification of Germany has largely failed. This is evident not only in a cultural fascination with fascism and tyranny, but also in their political resurgence: authoritarian patterns of thought and action have long since returned to German parliaments. But what would real denazification mean today – cognitively, emotionally, performatively? “Denazify yourselves!” is an attempt to use participatory performance to shape historical reckoning and responsibility both intellectually and emotionally – and to link both to today’s debates about justice. We begin with the blind spots of the postwar period: using original texts, heirlooms, fantasies, and oral history, we approach the legal continuity of the young Federal Republic with the Nazi state—and our own intertwined relationships with it.

But what do contemporary tyrannies look like? As the performance progresses, we encounter artificial intelligence, Christian fundamentalists, gender identity, and trans rights, among other things: from Nazi ideology to the Self-Determination Act and geopolitically motivated disinformation campaigns, frighteningly current lines can be drawn—in masks and costumes. You will be allowed to dance. It’s going to be great. Come along!

Die Entnazifizierung Deutschlands ist weitgehend gescheitert. Das zeigt sich nicht nur an einer kulturellen Faszination für Faschismus und Tyrannei, sondern auch an deren politischen Rückkehr: In deutschen Parlamenten sind autoritäre Denk- und Handlungsmuster längst wieder präsent. Doch was hieße eine wirkliche Entnazifizierung heute – kognitiv, emotional, performativ? „Entnazifiziert euch!“ ist ein Versuch, mittels einer partizipativen Performance historische Aufarbeitung sowohl gedanklich als auch emotional zu gestalten – und beides mit heutigen Auseinandersetzungen um Gerechtigkeit zu verbinden. Wir beginnen dabei mit den blinden Flecken der Nachkriegszeit: Mit Originaltexten, Erbstücken, Fantasien und oraler Geschichte nähern wir uns der juristischen Kontinuität der jungen Bundesrepublik mit dem NS Staat – und unseren eigenen Verwobenheiten damit.

Aber wie sehen zeitgenössische Tyranneien aus? Im Fortgang der Performance begegnen wir unter anderem Künstlicher Intelligenz, christlichen Fundamentalist*innen, Geschlechtsidentität und trans Rechten: Von der NS-Ideologie zum Selbstbestimmungsgesetz und in geopolitisch motivierte Desinformationskampagnen hinein ziehen sich erschreckend aktuelle Linien – in Maske und Kostüm. Es darf getanzt werden. Es wird super. Kommt vorbei !
